HU-GO - Distance based toll

What is the OBU?

OBU stands for On-Board Unit — it is the electronic device fitted to a vehicle that enables automatic distance-based toll charging on the Hungarian HU-GO network.

 

Hardware:

  • A small electronic device typically around the size of a large matchbox
  • Attaches to the inside of the windscreen using a suction cup or adhesive mount
  • Has an indicator light showing operational status
  • Relatively discreet and unobtrusive

 

Function:

  • Contains a GPS/GNSS receiver that tracks the vehicle's position continuously
  • Communicates with the HU-GO central system via mobile network (GSM)
  • Automatically detects when the vehicle is travelling on a tolled road
  • Calculates the charge based on:
    • Distance travelled on tolled roads
    • Vehicle category (axles, emission class)
    • Road category
  • Charges are applied to your HU-GO account automatically

 

Technical features:

  • Tamper detection — alerts if device is interfered with
  • Low battery warning — indicates when power is low
  • Status indicator lights — shows operational status at a glance

 

Power Supply:

  • Connects to the vehicle's 12V/24V power supply
  • Typically via the cigarette lighter socket or direct wiring

 

OBU Deposit:

  • A refundable deposit is required when obtaining an OBU
  • Deposit is returned when the OBU is handed back in good condition
  • Deposit amount varies — check current rates with NÚSZ
