General Questions

What is the Hungarian motorway vignette?

The Hungarian motorway vignette (called matrica in Hungarian) is an electronic toll system required to use Hungary's motorways, expressways, and certain main roads for most vehicles up to a total permissible weight of 3.5 tonnes.

It's a time-based, electronic vignette, meaning no physical sticker is affixed to the windshield, but it's linked to your license plate within the Hungarian toll database. Automatic camera systems that read license plates will confirm with the database if the required fee has been paid. The e-vignette is mandatory on all motorways, expressways ( both marked as M roads) and some primary roads in Hungary.

Vehicles (and vehicle + trailer combinations) that have a total permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes use the distance based toll system (HU-GO).
